Add travel time to Cal.com bookings

Cal.com's buffers are a fixed number of minutes, the same for every booking of an event type, wherever the meeting is. The road isn't: 10 minutes to one client, 50 to the next. DOFOTT reads the address of each booking once it reaches your Google Calendar and adds a travel block before and after it, timed by Google Maps. Those blocks are busy time, so your Cal.com booking page stops offering the hours you'll spend on the road. Nothing to install in Cal.com.
What Cal.com does, and what it doesn't
An event type in Cal.com can have a buffer before and after it, under Limits. It's a good tool for a gap between calls. For in-person meetings it has two limits. It doesn't know where you are coming from, so it's either too long for the café around the corner or too short for the other side of town. And it only surrounds Cal.com bookings: a meeting someone invited you to in Google Calendar gets no buffer at all, even though Cal.com sees it as busy.
DOFOTT works one level down, in Google Calendar itself. Every event with a location gets its own trip, whoever made it, and Cal.com already reads Google Calendar to decide when you're free.
Three steps
- Check that Cal.com checks your Google Calendar for conflicts. In Cal.com, Settings › Calendars: your Google account should be connected, and the calendar your meetings are in should be switched on under Check for conflicts. Bookings should be added to a Google calendar too, so they get travel time.
- Connect DOFOTT. On dofott.com, click Connect Google Calendar and sign in with Google. Set your home address, a work address if you have one, and how you travel: driving, transit, walking or cycling.
- Give in-person event types a location. In Cal.com, an In Person location with your address, or one that asks the person booking for theirs. Every booking of that type now reaches Google with an address, and DOFOTT adds the trip.
What happens after that
- Someone books you, the trip appears. Cal.com writes the booking to Google Calendar, DOFOTT hears about it there and adds a block before and after it, from wherever you'll be coming from: home, work in your work hours, or the meeting before.
- The booking page knows about the road. The blocks are busy events, so Cal.com treats them like any other meeting in your calendar: the next person can't book you while you're driving back.
- Reschedule or cancel, the blocks follow. When a booking moves, its blocks move with it. When it's cancelled, they go.
- Video calls stay as they are. A booking with a video link has no road to it, so it gets no block.
- Invitations too. A meeting someone else sent you with an address gets the same blocks once you've said yes, and your booking page respects them. An invitation you haven't answered keeps its blocks free, because a meeting that may not happen shouldn't close off the time.
Things to know
- Keep a small buffer in Cal.com. DOFOTT adds the trip to a booking after it's made, because until then nobody knows where it is. A buffer before in-person event types, about the length of a typical trip for you, keeps someone from booking a slot you can't reach. Once the booking is in, DOFOTT puts in the real time.
- A clash stays visible. If a trip runs into another meeting, DOFOTT doesn't shorten either. You see the overlap in your calendar and decide.
- Google Calendar only. If Cal.com checks an Outlook or iCloud calendar, DOFOTT can't add travel time there yet.
- The durations come from Google Maps, for the time of day the meeting starts: live traffic when driving, timetables for transit. For parking or finding the room, add a 5, 10 or 15-minute margin in DOFOTT's settings.
- One button to undo. Delete account and remove all DOFOTT blocks in DOFOTT's settings takes out every block it created. Your Cal.com bookings aren't touched; DOFOTT never changes an event it didn't make.

Does Cal.com have a travel time feature?

Do I need to install anything in Cal.com?
No. DOFOTT connects to your Google account once. Cal.com writes bookings there and reads your busy time from there, so the blocks work in both directions on their own.
Will my Cal.com booking page stop offering the time I spend travelling?
Yes, as long as Cal.com checks the Google calendar your meetings are in for conflicts. The blocks are busy events. The one exception is an invitation you have not said yes to: its blocks stay free until you do.
Should I keep my Cal.com buffers?
Keep a short one on in-person event types. DOFOTT adds the trip once a booking is made; the buffer stops someone booking a slot you could not reach before that.
Do video bookings get travel blocks?
No. A booking with a video link has no trip, so DOFOTT leaves it alone.
Is DOFOTT free?
Free during beta. When a paid plan comes, you get 30 days' notice by email, and the blocks already in your calendar stay.
