Add travel time to Notion Calendar

Notion Calendar has no travel-time feature, and neither does Google Calendar underneath it. DOFOTT writes a travel block before and after every event with a location straight into your Google account, and Notion Calendar shows those blocks like any other event. Nothing to install in Notion.

Why Notion Calendar can't do this on its own

Notion Calendar (the app that used to be Cron) doesn't store a calendar of its own. It shows the accounts you connect to it, and adds its own layer on top: scheduling links, time zones, items from Notion databases. Travel time needs two things that layer doesn't have: a Google Maps lookup, and a busy block that lives in the calendar itself, so your teammates, your booking page and your phone all see it.

Apple Calendar shows what happens when travel time stays in the app: it has the feature, but it never reaches Google, so it never appears in Notion Calendar either. DOFOTT does the opposite. The block is a real Google Calendar event, so it shows up everywhere your Google account does.

Three steps

Check that your Google account is in Notion Calendar. Settings › Calendars › Add calendar account. If you already see your Google events in Notion Calendar, this step is done.
Connect DOFOTT. On dofott.com, click Connect Google Calendar and sign in with Google. Set your home address, a work address if you have one, and how you travel: driving, transit, walking or cycling.
That's it. DOFOTT adds a travel block before and after every event with a location in the calendars you tick. Notion Calendar shows them as soon as it has them from Google.

What you'll see in Notion Calendar

The blocks are busy time. Notion Calendar's availability sharing and scheduling links treat them like any other busy event, so nobody can book you while you're on the road. The one exception is an invitation you haven't said yes to: its blocks stay free until you do, because a meeting that may not happen shouldn't close off the time.
Move the meeting, the blocks follow. Drag a meeting to a new time in Notion Calendar; the change goes to Google, DOFOTT hears about it there and moves the blocks with it. Change the location and the durations change. Delete the meeting and the blocks go.
Add a location, get a block. Type an address into the location field of any event you make in Notion Calendar. DOFOTT treats it like one made in Google Calendar.
Every device. The blocks live in your Google account, so Notion Calendar shows them wherever you open it, computer or phone.
One button to undo. Delete account and remove all DOFOTT blocks in DOFOTT's settings takes out every block it created. Your calendar goes back to how it was.

Things to know

Google accounts only. If Notion Calendar is showing you a calendar from another account, iCloud or Outlook, DOFOTT can't add travel time to it yet.
Notion database items don't get blocks. Items Notion Calendar shows from a Notion database live in Notion, not in your Google account, so DOFOTT never sees them. Give the meeting a Google event with a location and it will.
Recurring meetings get one recurring block, not a separate block for every week.
The durations come from Google Maps, for the time of day the meeting starts: live traffic when driving, timetables for transit. If you want slack for parking or finding the room, add a 5, 10 or 15-minute buffer in DOFOTT's settings.

Does Notion Calendar have a travel time feature?

No. Notion Calendar shows the calendars you connect; it has no setting that adds travel time to events. DOFOTT adds the blocks to your Google Calendar, and Notion Calendar displays them.

Do I need to install anything in Notion or Notion Calendar?

No. DOFOTT connects to your Google account once. Notion Calendar already reads that account, so the blocks appear on their own.

Will the travel blocks show up in my Notion Calendar scheduling links?

Yes. The blocks are busy events in Google Calendar, so availability sharing and scheduling links show that time as taken. The one exception is an invitation you have not said yes to: its blocks stay free until you do.

I use Notion Calendar with iCloud or Outlook. Does this work?

Not yet. DOFOTT works with Google Calendar accounts. If your Notion Calendar mixes accounts, only the Google ones get travel blocks.

Is DOFOTT free?

Free during beta. When a paid plan comes, you get 30 days' notice by email, and the blocks already in your calendar stay.

How do I remove the blocks?

One button in DOFOTT's settings deletes your account and every block it created.
