Add travel time to SavvyCal

SavvyCal's buffers keep a fixed number of minutes free before and after a new meeting, whatever is next to it and wherever it is. The road isn't fixed: 10 minutes to one client, 50 to the next. DOFOTT reads the address of each booking once it reaches your Google Calendar and adds a travel block before and after it, timed by Google Maps. Those blocks are busy time, so your SavvyCal links stop offering the hours you'll spend on the road. Nothing to install in SavvyCal.
What SavvyCal does, and what it doesn't
Under a link's availability you can set a buffer before and a buffer after. SavvyCal holds that space between a new meeting and the events already in your calendars, so nobody books you back to back. For in-person meetings the limit is the number itself: it doesn't know where you're coming from, so it's too long for the café around the corner and too short for the other side of town.
DOFOTT works one level down, in Google Calendar itself. Every event with a location gets its own trip, whoever made it, and SavvyCal already checks your calendars for conflicts before it offers a time.
Three steps
- Check that SavvyCal checks your Google Calendar for conflicts. Your Google account should be connected in SavvyCal, with the calendar your meetings are in used for conflicts, and bookings stored in a Google calendar so they get travel time.
- Connect DOFOTT. On dofott.com, click Connect Google Calendar and sign in with Google. Set your home address, a work address if you have one, and how you travel: driving, transit, walking or cycling.
- Give in-person links a location. Put the address in the link's location. Every booking through it now reaches Google with an address, and DOFOTT adds the trip.
What happens after that
- Someone books you, the trip appears. SavvyCal writes the meeting to Google Calendar, DOFOTT hears about it there and adds a block before and after it, from wherever you'll be coming from: home, work in your work hours, or the meeting before.
- Your links know about the road. The blocks are busy events, so SavvyCal treats them like any other conflict: the next person can't book you while you're driving back.
- Reschedule or cancel, the blocks follow. When a meeting moves, its blocks move with it. When it's cancelled, they go.
- Video calls stay as they are. A meeting whose location is a video link has no road to it, so it gets no block.
Things to know
- Keep a short buffer before in-person links. DOFOTT adds the trip once a meeting is booked, because until then nobody knows where it is. A buffer about the length of a typical trip keeps someone from booking a slot you can't reach.
- A clash stays visible. If a trip runs into another meeting, DOFOTT doesn't shorten either. You see the overlap in your calendar and decide.
- Google Calendar only. SavvyCal can check Outlook, iCloud or Fastmail calendars too; DOFOTT can't add travel time to those yet.
- The durations come from Google Maps, for the time of day the meeting starts: live traffic when driving, timetables for transit. For parking or finding the room, add a 5, 10 or 15-minute margin in DOFOTT's settings.
- One button to undo. Delete account and remove all DOFOTT blocks in DOFOTT's settings takes out every block it created. Your SavvyCal meetings aren't touched.

Does SavvyCal have a travel time feature?
SavvyCal has buffers: a fixed number of minutes kept free before and after a new meeting. It does not look up the route. DOFOTT adds the real travel time from Google Maps.
Do I need to install anything in SavvyCal?
No. DOFOTT connects to your Google account once. SavvyCal writes meetings there and checks your busy time there, so the blocks work on their own.
Will my SavvyCal links stop offering the time I spend travelling?
Yes, as long as SavvyCal checks the Google calendar your meetings are in for conflicts. The blocks are busy events. The one exception is an invitation you have not said yes to: its blocks stay free until you do.
Is DOFOTT free?
Free during beta. When a paid plan comes, you get 30 days' notice by email, and the blocks already in your calendar stay.
